CATARACT REMOVAL
INTRODUCTION
Over half of the persons above 60 years of age and many younger people suffer from cataract.
Cataract - definition and symptoms
Cataract (Latin «cataracta») is partial or total opacity of the lens.
The main symptom of the cataract is gradual worsening of vision. Patients usually describe that disorder as «clouding» of vision. The seen image is getting more and more blurred. Reading becomes difficult and driving could be dangerous. Persons with cataract suffer from light dispersion and double vision. Frequent change of glasses is often a sign of developing a cataract.
At present there is no medication preventing or curing cataract. If the illness develops, the only method of restoring correct vision is surgical cataract removal.
Cataract - classification and symptoms
There are two types of cataract:
-congenital
-acquired
Congenital cataract (cataracta congenita) is the lens opacity that one is already born with.
Acquired cataract develops as a result of ageing or disturbances in lens metabolism caused by internal factors (diseases) or factors coming from the environment (physical, chemical).
