CATARACT REMOVAL
METHODS OF TREATMENT
Treatment of congenital cataract is solely operative and consists in removing the lens. Detailed indications for a surgical intervention depend on the degree of loss of vision acuity and on whether the cataract affects two eyes or just one.
The decision regarding the surgery and post-operative treatment is made after performing comprehensive ophthalmological tests.
Acquired cataractand the resulting blindness can only be treated operatively.
None of the medicines developed so far reverses the process of lens opacification or halts its progress completely.
Over ten years ago, surgical cataract removal was considered to be a serious operation requiring long hospitalisation. Consequently, many patients would put it off for as long as possible.
This is no longer the case!
Now the cataract removal lasts about 20 minutes and is performed in local anaesthesia with eye drops. Ambulatory conditions mean that patients do not have to stay overnight in the Clinic and may go home after the surgery.
Intermedica offers its patients modern methods of cataract removal:
- Ultrasound Phacoemulsification - the procedure consists in making a small incision and introduction of a probe which breaks the opacified lens with ultrasound and then aspires the lenticular mass, then a soft synthetic lens is implanted intraocularly.
- Liquid Emulsification AquaLase™ - consists in breaking the opacified lens with a flow of warm BSS® liquid at a given pressure which ablates the patient’s opacified lens. This helps to eliminate ultrasounds totally.
Intermedica offers the following intraocular lenses:
- AcrySof®Natural - provides great protection against senile, macular degeneration ! This lens is provided with a yellow filter which replicates the natural colour of the lens and blocks the harmful influence of blue light on the retina. The AcrySof®Natural rolling lens is used as standard in every cataract removal at Intermedica.
- AcrySof®ReSTOR® - for patients with cataracts and presbyopia. This lens corrects for both conditions at the same time, thereby virtually eliminating the need for spectacles after surgery.
- AcrySof®IQ Natural - also corrects spherical aberration, which means improved image quality for the patients !
- AcrySof®Toric - for patients with cataracts and astigmatism, as it corrects for both conditions simultaneously.
