LASER CORRECTION

INTRODUCTION

Laserowa korekcja

Traditional forms of correction of vision defects consist in the use of additional elements decreasing or increasing the focusing power of the eye´s optical system, such as glasses or contact lenses. Although those types of correction are most widespread and have been in use for many years, they do have their disadvantages.

Aesthetic reasons, the type of work, lifestyle, type of sport activity that one goes in for - those are only some of the factors that make wearing glasses or contact lenses difficult or even impossible. In the case of contact lenses, the cleaning and care procedures and storage methods are quite troublesome. The degree of the vision defect is also vital; if the defect exceeds 5-6 dioptres, it often excludes a patient from social and professional life.

Surgical corrections of vision defects, which for some years now have become an established medical practice, concentrate on interventions in the cornea to increase or decrease the eye´s focusing power through reshaping the cornea.

Refractive surgery, also known as vision defect surgery, is now the only method that brings lasting correction of eye defects and ensures the best possible vision without glasses or contact lenses. This improves the comfort of patient´s lives.

Nowadays laser surgeries correcting eye defects are performed all over the world.

Laser correction of eye defects consists in the use of excimer laser to change the curvature of the front section of the eye, i.e. cornea. Computer-controlled laser generates a nonthermal, pulsating beam of UV radiation of the wavelength of 193 nanometers which breaks connections between molecules in the tissue and removes a layer of the cornea. Although the removed layer is microscopically thin, thinner than a human hair, the corneal curvature changes.

Laser surgery allows for the correction of vision defects in the following scope:

  • Short-sightedness to -10 D
  • Far-sightedness to +5 D
  • Astigmatism to 5 D

Laser correction of vision defects is the most precise and safest surgical method to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
